GARDEN STATE SOCCER LEAGUE
A LEAGUE CUP
2008 TOURNAMENT
The GSSL "A League Cup" is a competition open to all GSSL affiliated teams
in the Men A divisions: teams of different A divisions will play
against each other in a Tournament style competition.
PARTICIPATION
No extra fee will be charged to participate in this League function.
Participation is automatic unless the league is notified 2 weeks in
advance of the refusal to participate.
For the 2007/2008 season, all participating teams in the A divisions
will enter a QUALIFICATION ROUND to determine which teams advance
to the "A League Cup Playoffs".
A total of 22 teams currently registered in the 3 A divisions
(Central, North and South) of the GSSL are going to participate.
All 22 teams shall be grouped in a total of 6 groups (4 groups
made up of 4 teams and 2 groups made up of 3 teams).
The teams in each group shall play against each other once to accumulate
points to determine a first and second place finisher.
All first place finishers in the 6 groups, will automatically advance
to the Quarterfinals.
An additional 2 teams shall be picked out of the 6 second place teams
to be included in the Quarterfinals.

COMPETITION FORMAT
ALL RULES OF THE GSSL WILL APPLY DURING ALL GAMES OF THE
LEAGUE CUP TOURNAMENT also in terms of ACCUMULATION OF
YELLOW CARDS, FINES and SUSPENSIONS.
LEAGUE CUP SCHEDULE
QUALIFICATION ROUND
ALL participating teams shall be involved in a qualification Round.
There will be a total of 6 groups in the 2008 A League Cup
Qualification Round.
Qualifications Round will be played on:
May 11, 2008
May 18, 2008
June 1, 2008
In case of postponement (because of State Cup or weather)
games must be made up not later than June 4th, 2008
Groups will be composed of 3 or 4 teams, and all teams within a group
shall play against each other once during the qualifications Round.
These Qualification Round games will end after 90 minutes of play
(no overtime or penalties).
At the end of this round, team(s) will be advanced into the
"A League Cup Playoffs" based on standings determined according
to the following criteria in the order given below:
1. Most Points (3 for win, 1 for tie, 0 for loss)
2. Head to Head Result (for all teams involved)
3. Best Goals Difference
4. Most Goals In Favor
Each team will pay HALF of the referee fees for these games.
Referee Fee - $66.00 (each team pays $33.00)
CRITERIA TO ADVANCE TO LEAGUE CUP PLAYOFFS
All 6 teams finishing FIRST in their respective groups, shall
advance to the "A League Cup Playoffs"
Two (2) BEST SECOND PLACE teams shall be picked out of all
6 second place teams of the Qualification round, to be
included in the Quarterfinals.
The 2 BEST SECOND PLACE teams will be determined by calculating
the following averages in the order given below:
1) Highest Points Average (Points/number of games played)
2) Lowest Goals Against Average (Goals against/number of games played)
A Random draw shall be used if teams are tied after the above criteria
is applied.
LEAGUE CUP PLAYOFFS
The Quarterfinals, the Semifinals and the Final
constitute the League Cup Playoffs.
The "A League Cup Playoffs" will include a total of 8 teams: the 6 teams
that won their Qualification Round group, PLUS 2 teams from all
second place Qualification Round finishers as explained above.
The 8 teams that qualify for the League Cup Playoffs, shall play
against each other according to the schedule below in a knock-out format.
The Home team for Quarterfinals is indicated in the Playoffs
schedule attached below.
The Home team for the Semifinals and for the Final
shall be determined according to NJSA State Cup rules.
GAME TIME SHALL BE DETERMINED BY THE HOME TEAM or otherwise
agreed by BOTH TEAMS.
THE TIME INDICATED IS UNOFFICIAL AND MUST BE FINALIZED.
PLAYOFFS SCHEDULE
. QUARTERFINALS - June 8, 2008
These games will be played at one of teams home field as indicated
in the Playoffs schedule attached.
These games will last 45 minutes per half, with 2 FULL 15 minutes
(NO GOLDEN GOAL) overtimes, and penalties if necessary.
. SEMIFINALS - June 15, 2008
These games will be played at one of teams home field.
These games will last 45 minutes per half, with 2 FULL 15 minutes
(NO GOLDEN GOAL) overtimes, and penalties if necessary.
. FINAL - June 22, 2008
The "A League Cup" Final will be played at a location chosen by the League.
This game will last 45 minutes per half, with 2 FULL 15 minutes
(NO GOLDEN GOAL) overtimes, and penalties if necessary.

ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY
ALL teams that qualify for the Playoffs Finals, MUST be present
on the day scheduled.
A fine of $200.00 will be assessed to the team not showing up
with sufficient players to play the games.
REFEREE FEES
Each team will pay HALF of the referee fees for the Quarterfinals
and for the Semifinals games.
The League will pay for the referees fees for the Final game.
